Think of your makeup stash, what does it look like?
Is it all carefully laid out on your vanity or overstuffed into a too small makeup bag? Mine is the latter.
In our little place here in Kentucky we don’t have much vanity space so I keep all my makeup in one small toiletry bag I stole from my husband. It really isn’t very attractive all bulging at the seams and barely zipping. But the worst part is all my brushes are hidden, crushed and ruined in this cramped little space. It always seems that the one delicate brush I am looking for is lost in some deep corner that I can only get to by pulling everything out, only to find it’s fragile hairs had given in and are no longer that perfect brush shape it once was!
Ugh, another one ruined! Why is it that even the smallest of makeup brushes can cost so much money? But being my frugal self, I use that horrid brush until it is literally begging me to put it out of its misery. After losing a few fallen comrades I finally cracked and decided that I could save myself some money by storing my brushes properly!
So I went out and made myself my own makeup brush roll under $5!
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- A fabric placemat – $3.99 (Target)
- Ribbon – $.99 (Hobby Lobby 50% off ribbon)
- Tape measure or ruler
- Pen or marker to mark fabric
- Sewing machine
Take your placemat and place it face down on a table, then fold the bottom a third of the way up the place mat. I used a regular 14″x19″ place mat, so I folded up 4 3/4″.
Pin the corners of the fold up so that it doesn’t shift in sewing.
Now, sew along the sides of the fold as close as you can to the edge creating one big pocket in your placemat.
Take out your makeup brushes and other tools you plan on storing in your roll and use a pen, marker, or in my case some white eyeliner to mark how wide you want your individual pockets to be.
Remember to make the pockets wider than the width of your brushes or they won’t fit! I Decided I wanted to store my beauty blender in my roll as well so I left about 4 inches at the end. This pocket was big enough for my beauty blender and also gave me more room to add more pockets in the future.
Sew your pockets! Using your marks as a guide sew down the big pocket multiple times to create many little pockets for all your brushes and tools! I alternated between 3″, 2″,1″, and 1/2″ pockets. Plus, my placemat had nice woven lines I was able to follow with my sewing machine to make sure they were straight!
Finally, use a piece of ribbon 24″ long, fold it in half, and sew it onto the middle of the right side of the placemat. This will be your ties for your roll to keep it secure when storing your brushes!
Add in your brushes and tools, roll it up from left to right, and tie! No more ruined brushes! Plus now I have way more space in my makeup bag!
There are so many cute placemat options around, especially at Target! So make one for mom, your BFF, and one for your craft supplies too! What can you store in yours? [themify_icon icon=”fa-heart-o” link=”http://”] Cassie Jean
