Well this year again, Brian and I waited till the last minute to make our Halloween costumes. This last Saturday our church had a trunk or treat party and Brian and I had stayed up the night before making our little costumes and finishing them that morning! We even made another little costume for Jamie even though I had already made him three others! A pineapple, ice cream cone, adorable cactus and now a little baseball costume, which was definitely the easiest and most simple but it worked for our theme.

In celebration of how well the Cubs are doing this season, we decided to go as Steve Bartman and the Chicago Cubs. If you don’t understand our costume, watch a little more SportsCenter or click here for the full story! Steve Bartman was a fan who tried to catch a foul ball at the 6th game of the NLCS, that could have been caught by outfeilder Moises Alou. That inning the cubs let up 8 runs losing 8-3 and was eliminated the next day. People blame Bartman for the loss of the Cubs, and after gallons of beer poured over him and later receiving death threats Bartman went into hiding and is still hiding today.

Being our crafty cheap selves, and after finally decided what our costume would be, we ran to Goodwill to get our supplies. Now I had every intension of doing a full DIY post on this awesome costume, but in our rush to get everything ready for our church party, I totally spaced taking pictures until everything was already done! Ugh! I did however, take a few before pictures of my jersey so I’ll post those along with a description of how we made everything!

Here’s How We Did It:

So I am going to first start with my Cubs out fit because that is what I have a few pictures of! Here’s what I used for my baseball jersey and cap.

Baseball Jersey and Cap:

  • Striped button up shirt from Goodwill
  • Blue hat from Hobby Lobby
  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • Sewing machine

The first thing I did was make my felt Cubs logo for the front of my jersey. I cut out a blue circle then a slightly smaller white circle and my red letters and hot glued them together and set it aside.

Next I cut my off half of my sleeves, flipped the edges in and top stitched it to make a clean edge. I then also cut off my collar and added an additional piece of scrap fabric I had lying around to the edge, flipped it in and top stitched it to create a good edge. I got the idea from this video of how to make a baseball jersey out of a t-shirt.

Brian cut out our logos for our hats and the logo for my sleeve. It isn’t what is actually on the cubs sleeve but I wasn’t about to make a bear cub so I opted for the ‘C’ instead. We hot glued our logos together and hot glued them to my jersey and our hats. One for me and one for Mr. Steve Bartman here.

(oh so dramatic pose haha!)

That completed my costume, so I moved on to Jamie’s. I used:

Baby Baseball Costume:

  • 6-12 month white t-shirt from Hobby Lobby
  • Red puff paint.

This one is pretty self explanatory, but I used his Bumbo seat to get nice even round edges for the baseball stitching, using the red puff paint. We completed his look with a red beanie we had, and his little white Vans.

Now the costume that we’re all excited about!

Steve Bartman Costume:

(Poor Jamie! LOL)

  • Black crew neck sweater from Goodwill
  • Green turtle neck sweater from Goodwill
  • Blue hat from Hobby Lobby
  • Headphones
  • Glasses
  • White and red felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and sticks

This costume was actually incredibly easy, taking us only about an hour or so to complete. We looked up the Renegades logo (which was the baseball team Bartman coached and the sweater he was wearing at the game) and Brian traced and cut that out of felt and hot glued it to the black sweater. Like I said before, He also cut out the logos for our hats and glued them on.

All that was left was to put everything on, add a pair of jeans, and wah-lah! Steve Bartman, Chicago cubs fan/player, and our little baseball!

I loved this costume because it was fun to see everyones’ reactions when they actually knew who we were! Well I would have to say that our costumes were a success! Especially for begin so last minute, and it only cost us about $30 which is awesome for a whole family!

What are you going as for Halloween? Are you still deciding?! Let me know what you come up with! [themify_icon icon=”fa-heart-o” link=”http://”] Cassie Jean
